Russians Mark Vartanian (known as Kolypto), a suspect in the creation and subsequent support of the malware Citadel, was brought before the Federal court of the United States. In December 2016 the Norwegian authorities extradited a hacker in the United States. He was charged with computer fraud, according to the website of the Ministry of justice.
As stated in a press release of the Ministry, the alleged role of the accused is the development and improvement of the Citadel malware, which the attackers have caused significant financial damage to organizations and individuals worldwide.
Citadel is a collection of malicious programs designed to infect computer systems and theft of financial and personal data of victims. Commercial distribution of the Citadel began in 2011. Investigators estimate that this program has infected about 11 million computers worldwide. The damage from its activity has made more than $500 million.
We will remind, in September 2015, the court sentenced the programmer from St. Petersburg Dmitry Belorossov (also known as Rainerfox) to 4.5 years in prison for infecting victims computers with malware Citadel, as well as creating and managing a botnet including more than 7 thousand devices.
